Tutor note 3

Two-year schools and transfers: how aid follows you

Many students start at a two-year school or move between schools. Aid does not always move in the way people expect.

Lower sticker price, same forms

Community colleges often have lower tuition, but aid is still requested through the same forms. Some students find they need less aid, others still qualify for help with living costs.

Moving schools

When you transfer, the new school needs to receive your aid information. The form lets you list schools, and the school’s aid office can confirm what it has.

What does not travel

Grants a school funds itself, and some state programs, may not follow a student. Each has its own rules.

A habit that helps

Keep a copy of every award letter and ask each school how credits and aid will line up. We do not advise on specific schools.
