Tutor note 2

Verification explained: when a school asks for more documents

Some students are asked to send extra documents after filing their aid forms. The process is called verification and it is routine.

A routine check

The U.S. Department of Education selects some applications for verification, and schools may also select others. Many selections are random.

Typical documents

Schools commonly ask for tax records, proof of household size, or other forms confirming what was reported. The exact list comes from the school.

Timing matters

Aid can be held until the documents arrive, so deadlines in the school’s request are worth noting and keeping.

What to do

If you receive a request, read it in full and ask the aid office what it needs. We cannot see or process anyone’s documents.
